What I'm Listening To This Week 27/10/11

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we'll begin.
1) Justice - On 'n' On

Justice, the French dance music duo, pioneers of rock/dance music return with their second album, 'Audio, Video, Disco', four years after their debut '†' which received massive critical acclaim. This time round they have a slightly different sound, whereas the first album was full of fuzzy bass lines, hard hitting synths and lots of electro wizardry, 'Audio, Video, Disco' is more like a prog-rock/classic rock/dance fusion. As the song above 'On 'n' On' shows they have taken influences from the likes of AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Van Halen, but all done lovingly on synthesizers.

2) The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Whereas Justice above was put in this blog for musical reasons, this one is for more personal ones. My mum and dad came up at the weekend to make sure I was still alive at my accommodation, luckily I was, however my Mum was horrified to discover I hadn't been getting my five-a-day and therefore must be feeling unwell. My dad who wasn't too concerned with my dietary habits, brought me up some CD's, notably The Smiths - The Queen is Dead as well as a few others. I've had mixed affections for The Smiths, originally hating them in my youth and now loving them. This is a brilliant song with iconic Morrisey misery.

3) Stetsasonic - Talkin' All that Jazz

Some old school hip hop to finnish off. I first heard this song in a Playstation 1 game called 'Thrasher: Skate & Destroy', when I must have been about eleven possibly younger. The soundtrack to the game was brilliant with the likes of Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash featuring on it too. In my opinion this is just a cool song, which seems very nostalgic now.

I hope you have enjoyed my choices this week and I'll put three more songs up next week.

Au Revoir

What I'm Listening To This Week 03/11/2011

1) Arctic Monkeys - Evil Twin

Last night I went to see Arctic Monkeys live at Manchester M.E.N. and as a life long fan they were amazing!! I can't stress enough how enjoyable the set was, it literally blew me away. The song above is the b-side to their latest sing, 'Suck It & See' and I think its great. Without being too pretentious, this song sounds similar but different to their previous work and encompasses everything I love about the band. It has witty lyrics, great drumming courtesy of Matt Helders and in my opinion is just a fantastic. If you want to see the band live which I suggest you do if you want to see a band on top of the world!! Then their website, http://www.arcticmonkeys.com/, has all tour dates, pictures, videos, songs, mechandise you could possibly want.

Arctic Monkeys
M.E.N. 02/11/11

2) Lana Del Rey - Video Games

She's being talked about from Radio 2 to NME as the new big thing. At first when I heard this I was unsure, originally I thought she was just the American Florence and the Machine, but after further listening it's grown on me and I'm appreciating it now. It's slow and beautiful but also has a sort of sarcastic mood throughout which makes for interesting listening. I'm quite intrigued to see if she can follow up the hype with another single of similar quality. Only time will tell.

3) Madeon - Pop Culture

Something a little different for this weeks final installment. This was introduced to me by one of my flat-mates and instantly loved it. Using 39 samples of other songs he has created this little beauty. He's 17, from France and is being heralded as the next big thing in dance music, already packing out Parisian clubs. If you're wondering what that thing is he's magically using to create this sound it's called an Ableton Live and it's very expensive. You're looking at over £200 for a second-hand one!! Put it on the christmas list?

What I'm Listening To This Week

So this is a little project I've been doing in class it's pretty self explanitary I think, just have a read and see what you think:

 1) Dog Is Dead - Hands Down

Dog Is Dead are a relatively new band which are being heralded as the next big thing by the likes of NME. I first saw them in Norwich earlier this year, supporting Viva Brother (who were awful), they really interest me and when I heard they were playing at Leeds Cockpit on tuesday night I jumped on the band wagon. They. Were. Brilliant! They are such a great band to watch live and their songs are so catchy that it's actually hard not to sing along to them. They also had a great support band in the form of Marsicans, a young, local, indie outfit who I thoroughly enjoyed too. The price of this gig was cheap as chips too, in the words of David Dickinson, for only £6 you got 2 great bands what more do you want! if they return in the near future I will see them again for sure.

2)Golden Silvers - True No. 9 Blues (True Romance)

This is a band I found about a year ago and then they just sort of disappeared. And now i've found them once again and remembered how good they were! Their sort of 80's influenced dancey style is somewhat lacking in todays music market. This song just makes me want to dance, it's got a great bassline and great drums and great synth. What more do you want from a song? I've been informed today however that they have now split up so any dancing like that in the video is out of bounds now, such a shame!

3)Major Lazer - Original Don

I'm still unsure about this one. No one can deny the influence Major Lazer has had on the music industry, even Beyonce is doing horrible reworkings of Pon De Floor. I love the African/Jamaican feel they have in their sound and although at first listen I thought it was utter garbage, it does get stuck in your head and I've found myself unknowingly bouncing around my room singing the tune. Maybe its a grower, who knows.

Thanks alot for reading, I hope you've enjoyed this small delve into my record collection

Take care

x
